Ataturk Cup organized by Turkish Sailing Federation in Bodrum was significant in that it was Alp’s first sailing race in the Laser Standard class. This meant he was an Olympic-class athlete now. After a 5-day accelerated training period, this first race reflected the joy and excitement of novicehood more than a challenge. Alp turned the race that was canceled on the first day to his advantage and stayed in the sea to go on his training. On the second day of sailing, he went sailing after waiting for two hours on the land and then came back with the scores of 2nd place and 5th place. In the first race of the third day, in which he usually started in the 3rd place, he achieved the scores of 3rd place and 2nd place following a great race despite the high weather.
On the fourth day of TSF Ataturk Cup, in which he competed comfortably, he went up to the second rank in the general category in the Laser Standard class. On the fifth day, he maintained his success and took the podium by leaving behind his experienced competitors with whom he competed for the first time.
The 50th Balkan Championship Organized in Tekirdağ was the last and one of the best races of young sailor in the Radial class. This race had a positive impact on the scores as young sailor had participated with a positive mood like making a jubilee before passing on to standard class. Races continued for four days, and races had to be canceled on the third day due to adverse weather conditions. On the fourth day, Alp was maintaining the third place in the Balkan Championship in the men’s category. Alp became the second of Balkans on the last day of Balkan Championship and made final in the Radial class, which was worthy for him and his country. And, he had our flag raised up to the flagpole accompanied with the Turkish National Anthem and had the participants and the audience experience the feeling of a unique pride.
Alp participated in Laser Radial Adult World Championship two days after the Youth race as he did not find Youth Championship races as challenging as he had expected. These two races one after another was going to be challenging from all aspects. He believed that Adult category races, organized in Medemblik, would be a wonderful experience for him. And he turned out to be right. He saw a yellow flag in the first race where he finished in the 38th place. After that, he got irreversible penalty point DNE due to a flaw of rule. Even if this occurrence demotivated the young sailor to an extent in the first place, it led him to discover his ambition. He went on competing after persuaded by his family who was with him at all times during the race, on the third day he made a false start, and then got a good result by coming in the 14th place on the fourth day. He had taken the decision to go on and would do everything he could do finish the race. Our sailor finished in the 49th place the Laser Radial Adult World Championship where he competed with the best sailors of the world.
